Why We Don't Use Behentrimonium Methosulfate!

Behentrimonium methosulfate (BTMS) is a common ingredient found in hair care and skin care products, especially conditioner bars and also shampoo bars. It is often used as a replacement for silicone. It is a cheap way to create almost the same effect as with silicone. However, in certified natural cosmetics this ingredient is NOT ALLOWED! Of course, this ingredient is not used at SKOON

There are negative consequences for the environment and possible risks for humans and animals.

  1. Environmental concerns: One of the main reasons to avoid BTMS in cosmetics is its potential impact on the environment. BTMS is a synthetic compound that does not biodegrade easily. When these products are washed away, they can end up in waterways, where they can accumulate and pose a risk to aquatic life.
  2. Toxic: Studies have suggested that certain quaternary ammonium compounds such as BTMS can be toxic to aquatic life. These compounds can disrupt the function of aquatic ecosystems and harm fish, algae and other organisms.
  3. Health: Although BTMS is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics at low concentrations, there are still concerns about the potential health risks associated with its use. Some individuals may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions to BTMS, especially those with sensitive skin.
  4. Alternatives: There are natural and more environmentally friendly alternatives to BTMS that can provide similar conditioning effects in cosmetics. Plant-based Ingredients/emulsifiers (which we use) provide effective alternatives without the risks.
  5. Legislation: We hope that the government will take further action regarding the use of risky ingredients in products that we use every day. As awareness of these issues grows, there may be stricter regulations or bans on the use of compounds such as BTMS in cosmetics.

So be careful with non-certified "natural" products or vegan and/or plastic-free products. Together we make a cleaner world!
